A first idea proposed small units to be placed on top of the existing rooftops. These units should inhabit different public and restricted accessible programmes. Some public units should furthermore only be accessible passing private units.
The following ideas show methods to organize such an additional layer.
relations
Possible configurations how the additional layer can be connected to the existing volumes. Private or public areas, visible or non-visible from the street layer.
Connecting private areas with private areas creates a transition of: public-private-private. Other possible combinations are public-private, public-public |
or public-private-public. The latest can be understood as the most complicated connection.
By means of the visibility from the street level the attraction of areas can be altered and controlled. Some areas might still be attractive as they can only be seen from other areas of the additional layer. They are therefore gaining a certain kind of privacy and secrecy.
visibility
Some areas are visible from the street layer. Others can only be seen if another area is entered.
connections
The different areas shall be connected. This can happen in a row as well as in more complex concatenations. |
These connections create an additional relation between the single areas.
verticality
Linking to the Japanese tradition of rising private areas onto a higher level the vertical order of areas shall be used to create a classification. Therefore the kind of link between each area has to be carefully chosen. Transitorily connections between public and private areas have to be linked with the specific programmes of the areas.
If a public area can only be accessed through a private area it is necessary that the quality of privacy in that area is influenced by this fact. |
